Mets ink Peña to minor league deal

The New York Post reports that the Mets have signed veteran outfielder Willy Mo Peña to a minor league deal. He will report to extended spring training. He will report to AAA-Buffalo after that.

The right-hand hitting Pena, originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1998, had refused a minor-league assignment from the Nationals last month and was granted his unconditional release.

Pena hit just .205 in 64 games for Washington last season.

The Curious Case of Philip Humber

We all remember Philip Humber don't we? You know, that kid that was one of the top Mets pitching prospects? Yes that kid. The one that was involved in the Johan Santana trade. Well, he's been released after a very rough time with the Twins.

Humber, 26, gave up 6 runs in 4.1 innings with the Twins this year.

This Santana trade just keeps on looking better and better...

Omir Santos: The real deal?

Welcome to the new Mets 411 (formerly Mets Blog NY.) Along with out new identity, comes more features, better analysis and coverage, and a whole new interactive blog.

Well we knew it would happen. Brian Schneider made his first visit to the DL of the 2009 season, and instead of calling up Robinson "Mommy caught me with my hand in the cookie jar" Cancel, the Mets gave Omir Santos, an offseason minor league free agent signing, a chance.

He was good. He got the start yesterday and got a few hits, a very nice day at the plate.

Lets hope that should Castro go down or Schneider get hurt again when he comes back from the DL, that this will be the guy we call on and not Cancel.

Changes coming

To provide a better experience for you, we are going to be updating Mets Blog NY with an upgrade. Along with the upgrade will come a new name. Mets 411.

Mets 411 will bring you the most comprehensive Mets blogging experience on the web.

The Mets designated OF Marlon Anderson for assignment.

Marlon Anderson designated for assignment

This just in...

The Mets designated outfielder Marlon Anderson for assignment Saturday, clearing roon on their 25-man roster for pitcher Livan Hernandez, who will make his first start Saturday night against the Florida Marlins.

If Anderson, 35, clears waivers, he can either accept a minor-league assignment or become a free agent. He went 0-for-4 in the Mets' first four games this season.

Gary Sheffield speaks to reporters

Saturday, April 4, 2009

Finally

Its about time.
The longest spring training ever is over, and Opening Day is near.

Hopefully the Mets aim high this season, and there is reason to believe.

We've got two of the best closers in baseball.
Some of the most feared bats in Wright, Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado.

A decent rotation lead by Johan Santana & company.

And now we have Gary Sheffield (not too happy about) on the team.

So what are you hopes for this season? Comment this and let us know.

MY PREDICTION: Mets win the NL East.
