Pitcher Oliver Perez will have season ending surgery, multiple outlets are reporting.

He was diagnosed with patella tendon tendinosis, and is having surgery in his right knee to repair the problem.

No word on who will be called up from the Mets dwindling farm system to replace him on the roster.

update Pitcher Lance Broadway, who was acquired in the Ramon Castro trade, will take Perez's spot on the roster.

"It will be minor arthroscopic surgery to clean up bone chips. Santana out for rest of '09" says Como.

Wagner traded to Red Sox

Billy Wagner has pitched his final game in a Mets uniform.

Wagner, 38, has been traded to the Boston Red Sox for two players to be named later, reports SNY news director Brad Como on Twitter.

The Boston Globe is reporting the Mets will receive 2 mid-level prospects in return.

So long, Billy. You were very good to us. I hope next year your 100% healthy and can close again.

Wagner deal "in jeopardy"

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, "the Red Sox's chances of landing Mets reliever Billy Wagner are in serious jeopardy."

Rosenthal says there are two problems:

1) Wagner wants to have the option of leaving after the 2009 season, but the BoSox are not willing to guarantee that his 2010 contract option will not be used.

2) Boston wants to have the choice of offering Wagner arbitration. His agent is opposed to that idea.

Wilpon: Omar is back next year

The mysterious Mets owner Fred Wilpon has spoken. In a one question interview with the New York Post, he was asked about Omar Minaya's future with the team. "Am I going to bring Omar back next year?" Wilpon said. "Absolutely. That's a fact."

While that may not be the thing Mets fans want to hear, at least it provides stability and no longer raises the question as to who will be leading the Mets. Maybe.

If you remember, Wilpon said the same thing about Willie Randolph, just two days before he was fired. But, I'm going to take Wilpon's word on this one.

When asked about Wilpon's comments, Omar Minaya remained coy, but said that if he's coming back, so is manager Jerry Manuel. "Jerry is my guy," Minaya said. "We work well together."

Sheffield gone?

Andrew Marchand of ESPN 1050am wrote a very interesting blog article about Omar Minaya's future with the Mets. He says that Omar Minaya could be reassigned to "a vital role in player personell." He says that Minaya and Assistant GM John Ricco could essentially become "co-GM's" with Ricco becoming the "front man with the media."

Very interesting. Not sure if it would work though...

Minaya goes to Buffalo

Omar Minaya visited Buffalo today, the Mets AAA minor league affiliate.

He held a 15-minute media session to discuss the Bison's ongoing season. He stated that the Bison's play this season has been unacceptable (bye bye Ken Oberkfell, hello Manny Acta?) and that he will make the AAA team better through the "free agent market."

He also announced that Adam Wogan has taken over running the minor-league system in the wake of VP Tony Bernazard's dismissal. Wogan worked as farm director of the Montreal Expos/Washingont Nationals from 2002-05.

Is being formerly employed by the Expos/Nats a job requirement to work for Omar Minaya?

Interview with Myron Logan

I recently conducted and interview with Myron Logan of Another Padres Blog. We discussed the current series, injuries, and the Jake Peavy trade.

Mets 411: The Padres host the Mets tonight. With both teams being hurt, who do you think has the advantage going into the series?

Myron Logan: I give it to the Mets, simply because they are a better team. The Mets have an expected record, based on runs scored and runs allowed, of around 51-56. The Padres are at 40-69. The Padres do have home field advantage,which cuts into that gap a little bit, but I think the Mets still have an edge going into this series.

Mets 411: Speaking of injuries, who has it worse? The Mets or the Padres?

Myron Logan: I think I'll have to go with the Mets again here. Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and Jose Reyes have played a total of 124 games out of a possible 321. Ouch. Beltran's a borderline MVP-type player, Reyes is an excellent all-around shortstop, and Delgado is still a solid bat at first.

You don't need me to tell you that, but again, ouch. The Padres have had their own injury problems, losing Jake Peavy (before he was traded) and Chris Young, clearly their two best starting pitchers, for long periods.

Mets 411: Heath Bell, a former Met, has been great this season. Do you see him in the Padres long term plans?

Myron Logan: He's been great since arriving in San Diego, with a 2.55 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 215 innings with the Padres. I don't think he fits into the long term plan, mostly because closers -- or any player, really -- have a lot more value on a contending team. Bell's under contract for the next two seasons, both of which may see the Padres continue to struggle. It probably makes sense for San Diego to deal him in the off-season, and try to stock pile prospects for their next extended run.

Mets 411: Adrian Gonzalez has been having a great year, and was mentioned in some possible trades. Are you happy they chose to hold on to him?

Myron Logan: I'm sort of in the middle on this one, actually. I can see where a trade makes sense (same reason as stated above) and I can see why one doesn't. People want to come out to the park, or watch the team on TV, and have something to be excited about. In these tough times for the Padres, Gonzalez provides just that. He has great power, he can hit for average, he fields his position well.

He's just about all you could ask for. Then again, everybody wants the Padres to win again, and the best path to that road may be trading Adrian in hopes of returning some impact players that could help the next good Padres team. It's a tough situation, but it's fun to watch Gonzalez while he's here.

Mets 411: The Padres scored big on the Jake Peavy trade. Which player that they got back are you most excited about?

Myron Logan: I guess I'd go with Aaron Poreda here, just because he's rated highest by most prospect guys. He's only 22, he's big (6-6, 245), and he has a chance to become a solid contributer.

Clayton Richard, the other big left-hander acquired in the trade, has looked good in his first couple of starts. He might fit in as a back-of-the-rotation type guy. Dexter Carter and Adam Russell are decent prospects as well, as both were ranked in the 20s in the White Sox system, according to the Baseball America 2009 Handbook.

Mets 411: Was the departure of Jake Peavy bittersweet though?

Myron Logan: Oh yeah. Peavy was great during his run with the Padres. He was also a competitor, and a fun guy to watch. It's definitely hard to see a guy leave who had spent his entire career in the organization. Rebuilding can be a long, tough process.

Mets 411: Which up and coming minor player in the Padres organization are you most excited about?

Myron Logan: This one is becoming tougher and tougher to answer, as the Padres have done a pretty nice job adding prospects to the organization. Can I go with 2009 first round pick Donavan Tate, even tough he hasn't signed yet? Tate's an athletic center fielder who, based on the scouting reports, sort of reminds me of an Adam Jones -- I hope that's how he turns out. Of course, he was drafted out of high school so it'll be a while before he gets anywhere close to the big leagues.

Jon Niese likely suffered a torn hamstring in today's game. He will likely be placed on the DL.
Nelson Figueroa pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless ball, getting the win.
Bobby Parnell got his first career AB, and hit. He also pitched 3.0 scoreless innings and got his first MLB save.
Jerry Manuel said he would consider starting Parnell with all the recent injuries.
Gary Sheffield aggravated his hamstring in today's game. He is going to get an MRI.
The Mets head to San Diego for a 4 game series.

Second baseman Luis Castillo left the New York Mets' game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night with a sprained left ankle after he slipped and fell in the dugout.

Castillo grounded out leading off the seventh and was on his way back to the bench when he tumbled down the dugout steps and had to be helped up the tunnel by some teammates.

Angel Berroa came in to play shortstop in the top of the eighth and Alex Cora moved to second to replace Castillo, who went 1 for 3 and scored a run.

Reyes back to NY with "leg discomfort"

Wow. How tacky. The Mets recently unveiled "players choice gear." Gary Sheffield, John Maine, Omir Santos, Bobby Parnell, Daniel Murphy and JJ Putz worked with designers to create t-shirts/jerseys that reflected "them."

Five players combine with designers to create fresh look

NEW YORK -- Prior to Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies, the Mets unveiled the Players Choice Signature Series -- a set of merchandise designed by six Mets players for their fans -- that will be sold exclusively at the Players Clubhouse Store at Citi Field and on MLB.com.

Daniel Murphy, Bobby Parnell, J.J. Putz, Omir Santos and Gary Sheffield were on hand to model their own gear. John Maine, the sixth Met to take part in the project, was not available due to his shoulder injury.

The players designed T-shirts, jerseys and hats with consistent themes, working with Steve Wolff of Majestic in partnership with Aramark and Twins.

"We found we could make really fresh, dynamic products that reflect the personalities of the players," said Judy Heeter, director of business affairs and licensing. "It also sounds like the phones are ringing from other players and other teams who want to do the same thing."

Murphy built off his Irish heritage by infusing the Mets' classic road look with both the color green and a logo of a clover over his signature.

Parnell went with "earth tones" -- brown with camouflage lettering -- to give his merchandise an outdoors look that is big in his native North Carolina.

Putz strove for a patriotic feel, going with a camouflage jersey with red, white and blue lettering. Putz also produced an elaborate T-shirt design with his name in gothic letters above two eagles and a home plate bearing the Mets' interlocking "NY" logo.

Santos paid homage to his native country with a Mets logo that integrated the Puerto Rican flag in the background. His T-shirt consisted of a big picture of Santos in catching gear.

"I just wanted to see myself on a T-shirt," Santos joked.

Sheffield's jersey utilized a black pinstriped look with an elastic collar and the racing stripes down the shoulders and sides from the Mets' uniforms of the 1980s. The "10" on the back of the jersey includes a picture of Sheffield in action -- an idea the designers thought was particularly cool. Sheffield also made sure to include a logo celebrating his 500th home run, which he hit on April 17 at Citi Field.

Maine's gear showed off both the New York skyline and Mr. Met. Even though Maine wasn't there on Tuesday, it was his merchandise that was generating the most interest from fans early.

The players worked closely with Wolff, throwing out ideas before settling on themes, sketching designs and finally seeing them come to life in the attire they modeled proudly, if a little awkwardly, on "the catwalk" on Tuesday.

All five of the players present agreed that the project was a lot of fun to work on; they couldn't reach a consensus, however, as to whose merchandise was going to sell the most.

"Nobody's going to beat J.J.," Sheffield responded immediately.

"The guy on the end is going to do okay," Murphy replied, pointing at Sheffield. Putz added that Sheffield had the unfair advantage of sporting a logo for his 500th home run.

Mets sign Pettyjohn

The New York Mets today announced that they have signed LHP Adam Pettyjohn to a minor league contract and assigned him to the Buffalo Bisons. He has been activated to the team's roster today.

Pettyjohn was most recently in the Reds organization. He will likely take Brandon Knight's spot in AAA-Buffalo. Knight requested and was granted a release this weekend so he could sign with a Korean club.

Rubin defends self in today's Daily News

In today's New York Daily News, Mets beat writer Adam Rubin defended himself against the allegations made by Mets GM Omar Minaya. Rubin, who broke the eye opening stories of ex-VP of player development Tony Bernazard, was accused by Minaya of having an ulterior motive. This all happened during yesterday's coverage of the Bernazard firing, and to read coverage of that, read the blog I wrote yesterday.

Here's some highlights from the article by Rubin:

"Everything I wrote about Tony Bernazard - bombshell stories that appeared in the pages of the Daily News over the last week - is accurate."

"What I have done, and what Mets COO Jeff Wilpon acknowledged later yesterday, is ask Wilpon for "career advice." My question: Is it even remotely feasible for a baseball writer to get into an administrative job with a team - any team - down the road and what would I need for that to be achieved?"

"Wilpon once invited me to his office at Citi Field for an advisory session. I never took him up on it."

Rubin goes on to say that he got many of his stories directly from minor leaguers and their families.

Bernazard dismissed, Adam Rubin dissed

Today the New York Mets dismissed Tony Bernazard from his duties as Asst. GM and VP.

Here is blow-by-blow coverage of the press conference:

Omar Minaya said the investigation was done by the Human Resources dept.
Minaya said he met with Bernazard on Sunday to discuss the report.
Minaya said he recommended to the Wilpons that Bernazard be fired.
"This was a difficult decision to make" -Minaya.
Minaya states that all the public records about Bernazard are "not exactly how it went down."
Minaya said that he was shocked at some of the things in the Mets HR Report.
Minaya says: "I have a lot of respect for [Tony Bernazard] him."
Minaya said he was not aware of the Bernazard issues until the Daily News report.
"Is Tony the most friendly guy in the world? No." -Minaya
Minaya says Bernazard's role will be filled within the organization...for now.
Minaya said that he is satisfied with the job Bernazard did.

This is where it gets ugly.

Omar Minaya said that Daily News reporter Adam Rubin (who brought the Bernazard allegations to attention) lobbied for a player development position within the organization.
Minaya seems very fired up and tense; almost argumental.
Adam Rubin appears shocked and shaken.
Rubin questions Omar and calls what he said "despicable."

Jays reject another Phils bid for Halladay

In a new article on ESPN.com, Jayson Stark is reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies most recent offer of J.A. Happ, Michael Taylor, Carlos Carrasco and Jason Donald for ace Roy Halladay has been rejected by the Toronto Blue Jays.

That's a good group of prospects right there. Practically the Mets entire farm system!

Stark goes on to say that Taylor, Carrasco, and Donald are so highly regarded that the Phils once put them one their "untouchable list." Nontheless, the Jays still rejected the offer.

What does Toronto want? Cole Hamels, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard? (A Mets fan would only wish!)

Prospects of Halladay going to Philly are becoming more and more unlikely. Other teams interested in the Toronto ace are the Texas Rangers, and the Anaheim Angels.

This is good news to Mets fans. Can you imagine a healthy Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay at the front of the rotation. Scary...

Mark Buehrle pitches perfect game

White Sox ace Mark Buehrle pitched the 18th perfect game in Major League History today, the first since 2004. He retired all 27 Tampa Bay Rays batters to lead the White Sox to a 5-0 victory.

Sox centerfielder Dewayne Wise made an amazing catch and stole a homerun from Gabe Kapler to aid Buehrle in this historic feat.

By the way, former Met catcher Ramon Castro caught the perfect game. Castro was traded earlier in the season to the Chicago White Sox.

Mets injury news

According to a tweet by Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Alex Cora aggravated his already injuried thumb. He will take the night off. Angel Berroa will start at shortstop tonight.

Also, Hubbuch reports that a DL stint is "looking very likely." Kevin Burkhardt tweeted earlier:

"Sheffield is working out full steam today to test his hammy. How he feels tomorrow will tell the story"

Cory Sullivan will start in left tonight.

SI Rate's baseball's top 100 players

Today SI's Joe Posnaski released his "Top 100 Players" in Major League Baseball.

4 Mets made the top 100. Here they are:

9. Johan Santana, SP, Mets
He was 2-4 with a 6.19 ERA in six June starts and people screamed that he was done. But Santana is a demon in the second half ... and sure enough he has not allowed a run in his last two starts.

30. David Wright, 3B, Mets
His power has inexplicably disappeared, but he's hitting, running and playing defense as well as ever. If the power returns, he's a Top 10 player.

46. Jose Reyes, SS, Mets
Hard to know exactly where to put him because of his injury issues. When healthy he is, of course, one of the most exciting and unique players in the game. But how much will this injury affect his legs?

85. Francisco Rodriguez, RP, Mets
This may seem hard to believe, but K-Rod's numbers are better across the board than they were last year -- better ERA (1.81), way fewer hits per inning pitched (5.6), better WHIP. But no one seems to notice because his save total -- 23 -- is a long way from his record of 62 of last season.

Tony Bernazard: Enough is enough

WASHINGTON - The Binghamton Mets clubhouse nearly turned into a scene out of WWE Raw recently, when VP for player development Tony Bernazard removed his shirt and challenged the Double-A players to a fight during a postgame tirade, multiples sources told the Daily News.

Bernazard particularly went after middle infield prospect Jose Coronado, using a slang term associated with a woman's anatomy, a source indicated. The confrontation happened about 10days before the All-Star break, according to insiders.

"That's an all-timer if true," an AL official said upon hearing the account, which was corroborated by multiple people with ties to the Mets.

GM Omar Minaya acknowledged Bernazard spoke to the B-Mets in a "stern voice," but said he had no knowledge of the scope being portrayed.

"I know he did have a team meeting with them," Minaya told the Daily News. "It was not a 'you-guys-have-been-great meeting.' I know he spoke to them in a stern voice. But as far as what he was wearing, what kind of shoes he was wearing, I don't know anything about that."

While the 52-year-old Bernazard's actions were over-the-top no matter what the motivation, alleged underage drinking on the team apparently was one motivation for the eruption, an organization source said. Still, sending players to counseling rather than challenging them to a rumble might have been a more appropriate course of action.

Binghamton went 1-6 during an early July home stand against New Hampshire and Erie that coincided with that tumult. Three of the defeats came by at least seven runs. The team's longtime Double-A affiliate entered last night with a 36-58 record, in last place in the Eastern League's Northern Division.

"It's ridiculous that anyone in a professional baseball environment thinks it's acceptable," a friend of several B-Mets said about the treatment of the players.

The shoddy treatment of people in the system has led to mocking of the VP behind his back.

The News reported Tuesday that Bernazard, one of GM Omar Minaya's top lieutenants, recently erupted at the organization's manager of baseball operations. During a game at Citi Field, scouts took their customary seats in a row behind home plate. Bernazard showed up during play and wanted a seat occupied by a D-Backs scout. Bernazard's deputy, already seated in the row, suggested to the Mets VP that he wait until the half-inning ended, to minimize the disruption. Bernazard ripped into his deputy with a profanity-laced tirade as scouts and patrons watched in disbelief.

The Pirates' clubhouse is abuzz with word that a trade involving first baseman Adam LaRoche is imminent, and this is the reason the lineup has taken so long to get posted this morning.

That said, LaRoche is hitting in the indoor cage as I type this, and he probably will play this afternoon.

No word on a potential destination or anything like that just yet.

More as it comes, obviously.

UPDATE 11:47 a.m.: LaRoche is not in the lineup just posted.

11:58 a.m.: Word is that a LaRoche trade already is done, but this is unconfirmed. It also has not been denied by anyone with the team, either.

12:02 p.m.: Speculation among baseball people here from other teams is that LaRoche has been traded to the San Francisco Giants. Again, I stress, unconfirmed.

12:12 p.m.: LaRoche has been traded to the Boston Red Sox. No word on return yet. Still no official word of any kind from the team.

12:46 p.m.: Strange, but LaRoche is still sitting in the Pirates' dugout during the game. Hard to tell if he has a uniform on because he is wearing a jacket over the jersey, but he is wearing a Pirates cap. Could be that the Pirates are awaiting paperwork to be completed.

1:02 p.m.: Scouts in the seats are talking about how Jack Wilson may be involved in something, too. This is enormously unconfirmed, and it runs counter to information I have. But thought I would share. Do not take it for anything more than what the sentence actually says.

1:07 p.m.: The Pirates will receive two prospects, shortstop Argenis Diaz and pitcher Hunter Strickland, from Boston, according to the radio station WEEI in that city.

1:13 p.m.: Here are reference pages for Diaz and Strickland. Remember, these players coming here has not been independently confirmed.

1:18 p.m.: It is independently confirmed that it is Diaz and Strickland, thanks to the miracle of text messaging. Still no official announcement from the Pirates.

Julio Lugo not yet a Met

According to Alex Speier of the WEEI Sportsradio Network, Julio Lugo signing with the Mets is not necessarily a given. According to a MLB source, he says, the BoSox offered Julio Lugo to the Mets earlier this season, for "little to nothing in return."

Also regarding the rumors that Lugo has been working out at a Mets complex in the Dominician Republic, Speier confirmed that he is working out there. He also noted thought that Lugo also worked out there as a member of the Sox last year, so he may just be there to train.

Occasionally I like to take a look back on some former Mets from the previous season. Here it is:

Joe Smith, Cleveland Indians: Smith was traded to the Indians in the 3-way deal with the Seattle Mariners. Smith spent a good portion of the season on the DL, but was activated on June 9th. Smith has a season ERA of 5.87 with 8 K's.

Endy Chavez, Seattle Mariners: Endy, a fan favorite at Shea, was also in the 3-way deal with the Seattle Mariners. He's currently batting .266 with 2 HRs and an OBP of .657 in 50 games.

Aaron Heilman, Chicago Cubs: Heilman was sent to the Mariners in the 3-way deal with the Indians, only later to be sent to Chicago. Heilman, still a relief pitcher, has an ERA of 4.50 and has walked 17 batters, and is driving manager Lou Piniella crazy.

Some good news though, Alex Cora will be activated tomorrow from the DL, and will take Pagan's spot on the roster. It's going to be good to have Cora back at shortstop.

The Trade
The Ramon Castro era in Flushing came to an end last night. The New York Mets, in a tough situation with their starting catcher Brian Schneider coming off an extended stay on the disabled-list, traded the mainly career backup to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for RHP Lance Broadway.

It was a move that, in early April was unthinkable. Castro was a better hitter than Schneider. This all changed when a young guy by the name of Omir Santos joined the Mets when Schneider went on the DL. To make a long story short: Santos hit, and hit, and hit. Everyone knew that Jerry Manuel favored Santos over Castro, and this became evident in a game a few weeks ago when Jerry had Santos hit for Castro in a potential game winning situation.

We all know it should have been Schneider traded, not Castro. But who really is going to take on a $5 million salary of a catcher, who is oft-injured and hits .250 and 9 home runs at best in a season? So unfortunately, the odd man out was Castro.

What we acquired
Lance Broadway looked like the real deal in the 2005 amateur draft. He was picked fiftenth in the first round of the draft. He was regarded as a very vaulable prospect in the ChiSox farm system, and made his major league debut in September of 2007 for the Sox. He has a career 4.69 ERA with 2 wins and 2 losses in 40 innings pitched. In 16 innings in 2009 he has an 0-1 record with a 5.06 ERA. White Sox fans now refer to him as a "first round bust." He will report to AAA-Buffalo and pitch in the starting rotation.

Schneider back Saturday, Castro being shopped

The Mets announced that catcher Brian Schneider will be activated off the disabled-list tomorrow. This puts the Mets in a very tough place, being that Ramon Castro and Omir Santos (especially) have been playing great in his absence.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets are shopping around Castro. Rubin says that "If Castro can't be traded by Saturday's game when Brian Schneider is activated, the Mets are not prepared to eat his $2.5 million salary." This means that either the Mets will send down Santos, or they will carry 3 catchers, and get rid of one pitcher. Sending down Santos is highly unlikely considering how well he has been playing since he was called up.

If the Mets were to go with 3 catchers, I think the odd man out would be either Ken Takahashi or Sean Green. I would think the Mets would want to keep Takahashi (who is barely used) because they want two lefties in the 'pen. The most logical candidate would be Green, who does have minor league options.

Honestly, I would rather see Schneider go than Castro. I like Castro's bat much more, and I think that he gives more versatility to the team. Schneider is a great defensive catcher, but is almost an automatic out at the plate. If I were GM, Schneider would either not be activated for a while, released, or traded.

These stats speak for themselves:

Omir Santos: Avg: .268 HR 2 RBI 15 RUNS 10
Ramon Castro: Avg: .253 HR 3 RBI 13 RUNS 5

You'd have to be out of your mind to say that Brian Schneider would be producing those numbers right now, who hit .257 with 9 homers and 38 RBI's. (9 HR's is a lot for him in one year, actually.)

The case for signing Damion Easley

Remember Damion Easley? The guy that started at second base for most of the year last year while Castillo was hurt? I think Omar Minaya should reach out to his agent.

I know, he's 39 years old, but he's better than Ramon Martinez and Jeremy Reed combined. (And he's also a fan favorite.) Last year with the Mets, in 315 at bats, he hit a solid .270 with 6 home runs and 44 RBI's. I understand Omar letting him go and signing Alex Cora, who is a little bit better than Easley, but now that Cora is hurt and faces possible surgery, I think Easley is the (temporary) answer. I'm sure he's available on the cheap, and maybe even a minor league contract?

Sign him. And hurry, I hear the D-Backs have interest.

Lets face it. All of a sudden, the Mets injuries seem to be mounting.

First its catcher Brian Schneider with a strained back muscle. We now think that this injury was a blessing in disguise.

Next its Oliver Perez, who I’m sure was more mentally injured than physically. He was diagnosed with Right patellar tendonitis.

The most damaging injury of the team was to Carlos Delgado. Delgado was diagnosed with a Right hip impingement, and underwent surgery today. He is expected back after the All-Star break in late July.

And last night, we received the news that SS/2B Alex Cora was put on the DL because of a Torn right thumb ligament. We are now learning that he may require surgery.

Don’t forget Jose Reyes, who hasn’t played in the last five games. Jerry & Crew are denying that he will go on the DL though.

Back to the Delgado injury. What do we do? Although Fernando Tatis has done a good job filling in at first base during the short time Delgado’s been injured, he’s not an everyday player. So can we really suffer with those long nights with Jeremy Reed at first base?

The answer is no.

I’d like to see David Murphy become the starting first baseman until Delgado gets back. And yes Jerry, that means playing him almost everyday. That now means that your outfield consists of Gary Sheffield, Ryan Church, Fernando Tatis, Jeremy Reed, Carlos Beltran, and Angel Pagan. We know Beltran will start everyday in center field, so I’m sure Jerry can spread out playing time between Sheffield, Church, and Tatis to start, and for Pagan and Reed to come in as late inning defensive subs.

Luckily, this major injury to Delgado has happened earlier in the season so that we don’t have to jump the gun on a major trade. If the current first base situation doesn’t work out, it may be time to go trade for the Nationals Nick Johnson or the Orioles Aubrey Huff.

I was really hoping we could save our trading chips for a major starting pitcher in July, but if the current first base situation doesn’t hold up, we maybe have to use them in a position player trade and not a pitching trade.

In my opinion, we have to wait until we finish the next home-stand to gauge whether we need to make a trade or not.

Until then, have patience, and LETS GO METS!

The New York Post reports that the Mets have signed veteran outfielder Willy Mo Peña to a minor league deal. He will report to extended spring training. He will report to AAA-Buffalo after that.

The right-hand hitting Pena, originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1998, had refused a minor-league assignment from the Nationals last month and was granted his unconditional release.

Pena hit just .205 in 64 games for Washington last season.

Well we knew it would happen. Brian Schneider made his first visit to the DL of the 2009 season, and instead of calling up Robinson "Mommy caught me with my hand in the cookie jar" Cancel, the Mets gave Omir Santos, an offseason minor league free agent signing, a chance.

He was good. He got the start yesterday and got a few hits, a very nice day at the plate.

Lets hope that should Castro go down or Schneider get hurt again when he comes back from the DL, that this will be the guy we call on and not Cancel.

According to a team press release, on March 29 at 1:10 p.m., St. John’s will take on Georgetown for the first game played in Citi Field.

I thought the Mets would be the first ever to play in the new stadium, oh well.

Redding injured

Over at Mets.com Anthony DiComo is reporting the Mets pitcher Tim Redding has some shoulder discomfort and needs to stay off the mound until late next week. Redding had surgery on his foot back in November and was told not to put any pressure on it so he did not start throwing until 10 days before reporting to Camp.

The shoulder now is feeling some discomfort so he will just do some long toss before he try the mound again.

Redding said. "I got down here and I tried to force it, and it caused some discomfort in the back of my shoulder."

Redding, signed as a free agent, is trying to make the starting rotation and is up against youngster Neise and Freddy Garcia and maybe even Livan Hernandez.

Spotlight: Dan Warthen-Mets Pitching Coach

This is the first of a series of posts spotlighting Mets players, coaches, and more.

Daniel Warthen was a major league pitcher. Now, he's the pitching coach for the New York Mets.

Warthen was drafted in 1971 by the Montreal Expos. He pitched four seasons total with Montreal, Philadelphia, and Houston. He finished his major-league career with a 12 win-21 loss record and a 4.31 E.R.A.

Warthen began his coaching career with the Pittsburgh Piratesin 1981, following that with coaching in the minor league organizations of San Diego and Philadelphia. Warthen was the pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers(1999-2002), San Diego Padres(1996-97) and Seattle Mariners (1992), also serving as the Mariners bullpen coach in 1991. He was the pitching coach for the Triple A Norfolk Tides from 2003-2005.

Warthen served as the bullpen coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers under manager Grady Littlefrom 2006-2007.

On June 17, 2008 Warthen was named the New York Mets Pitching Coach replacing Rick Peterson. Since taking over, Warthen has attributed to the success of the starting rotation, especially Mike Pelfrey.

UPDATE According to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, Hudson gets $3.4MM guaranteed with another $4.6MM in incentives. Nice bargain for the Dodgers, though the draft pick loss hurts.

Sirius XM’s MLB Home Plate is reporting Orlando Hudson has agreed in principle with the Dodgers, pending a physical.

The Diamondbacks lose their second baseman to a division rival, but also receive L.A.'s #17 pick in the June draft plus a supplemental pick.

Jose Valentin

As you may recall, the Mets signed Jose Valentin to a minor league contract. But according to the Post, the Mets do not expect Jose to make the team, and would rather him be a player/coach at AAA-Buffalo. Valentin adressed the media Thursday. "Now that I have a chance, I'll take it. Use all the bullets I have left. See if I can make it. If not, I'll try to start a new career and start coaching."

I'd love to have Jose back in the clubhouse. He was a huge leader in 2006 to the team.

Luis Castillo shocked many by showing up to camp slimmed down. But now is the hard part, proving that he can still play to the level he once was: An all star.

Veteran infielder Jose Valentin, who is in camp on a minor-league invite at age 39, said his comeback attempt was prompted in part by the surprising success of laser surgery he had last summer to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

The Mets ultimately hope Valentin will agree to serve in a player-coach role at Triple-A Buffalo.

Mets' Stokes injured

Adam Rubin - NY Daily News is reporting that Met reliever Brian Stokes injured his right hamstring, leaving him unable to work off a mound. Downplaying the severity, Stokes said, "It didn't pop or anything."Stokes, who is expected to make the Met bullpen out of Spring Training, had a solid year for the Mets after being called up on August 9, 2008.

Out of options, if Stokes does not make the Met roster, he must clear through waivers before being re-assigned to the Mets minor league affiliate in Buffalo.

The chance of Stokes passing through waivers is slim at best.

Thank God baseball is almost here. After a long off-season, America's Pastime gets back into action. The Mets pitchers & catchers reported to spring training yesterday. That means baseball is back in swing--somewhat.

I have to admit, I was weary a few weeks ago, but now I think we are a stronger team than last year. Our bullpen was upgraded drastically, and if you look at it, our starting rotation looks better than last years as well.

Two members of the House of Representatives are demanding that the Mets scrap their $400-million naming-rights deal with financially troubled Citigroup because of the bank's receipt of federal bailout money.Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Ted Poe (R-Texas) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner requesting he "dissolve" the contract with the Mets to name their stadium Citi Field. The Mets' home opener there is set for April 13. In an interview yesterday, Kucinich said the financial behemoth is in no position to lay out cash to have its name on the Queens stadium. "It's just totally unacceptable that Citigroup should be able to spend $400 million in naming rights when they're the recipients of a massive federal bailout," he said.

Kucinich and Poe wrote that Citigroup's financial footing "has changed drastically" since the naming rights deal was struck in 2006. The agreement calls for Citigroup to pay $400 million over 20 years for the naming rights.The Mets "are fully committed to our contract with Citigroup," said Jay Horowitz, the team's spokesman.Steve Silverman, a spokesman for Citigroup in Manhattan, called the contract with the Mets a "legally binding agreement" signed two years ago.Once a financial juggernaut, Citigroup has been hit hard in the economic downturn. Taxpayers have funneled $350 billion to the banking giant as part of a federal financial rescue, including loans, in the last several months, the representatives wrote in their letter.In November, Citigroup announced plans to cut 50,000 jobs.Questions relating to the naming rights deal emerged last year as the financial institution's troubles surfaced and some wondered if the record-setting deal should be ditched. Two Staten Island councilmen even proposed changing the name to Taxpayer Field.The representatives' letter requests Geithner demand that "Citigroup dissolve the agreement" with the Mets."Absent this outcome, we feel strongly that you should compel Citigroup to return immediately all federal money received to date, as well as cancel all loan guarantees," the letter stated."Citi Field continues to provide a very positive way to support our community," Silverman said.Under Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program, Citigroup received about $45 billion in taxpayers' dollars in recent months.That infusion of cash gives Treasury officials authority to "protect the public's interest," Kucinich said.No TARP money will be used for Citi Field or "marketing purposes," Silverman said.When it comes to what's appropriate for banks to spend TARP money on, "It's a muddy field," said Jay Dahya, associate professor of finance at Baruch College.Treasury Department officials could not be reached for comment.

The Braves have signed Japanese ace Kenshin Kawakami, pending a physical.

Ken Rosenthal says the a Met official is actually "pessimistic" on their chance of signing Derek Lowe, because the Braves seem to be "all over Lowe."

The Mets are close to signing 31 year old Tim Redding, who pitched most recently with the Nationals. Redding went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA, but take his numbers with a grain of salt, because like his soon to be teamate Johan Santana, he was victimized by his Washington bullpen.
